Essence

Essence is a 3D printed designer stool that made out of pure PLA material. It is designed to promote the bio-degradable material PLA, enhance the future way of crafting and manufacturing (3D printing).
Designed and prototyped in Jan 2020 (Final year project)
Starting point
The plastic waste is one of the serious climate change hazards. In this project, our goal is to create a design that spread awareness about the issue of climate change by promoting the new material.
To create a visual impact on the product, I choose biomimicry as an entry point and start exploring.
DIY recycling has become a popular trend among tech geeks and environment recycler.
Biomimicry
The cushion is inspired by the different patterns on the dragonfly’s wing. Both sides of the bending part have more patterns that give it better flexibility without breaking.
Simulate the patterns with Grasshopper, by using Voronoi. It shows different flexibility of the PLA sheet. On the left-hand side, by using the same amount of material, the dense pattern part has better flexibility than the spared pattern part. However, their pressure endurance is around the same.
